The SOAK Halyard Clip ensures that your spinnaker will not launch itself while sailing upwind and that the halyard will not get in the way during tacks and maneuvers. The Halyard Clip automatically releases during a spinnaker hoist so you do not have to remember to un-clip it.

  • holds halyards out of the way while not in use
  • automatically releases the halyard with the force of the spinnaker set
  • high quality Nylon with a UV inhibitor to last for many years
  • Nylon attachment line is included
  • Works with 5/32"(4mm) - 3/8"(9mm) halyards (dinghy ~ 40ft boat)

"I first used the Halyard Clip at the Texas Lightning Districts in Houston.  It was great!  Not only did it work as described by Andrew, but it allowed us to go into the top mark with one less item on our mental check list.  Fantastic innovation!" Skip Dieball, 2009 US SAILING Championship of Champions winner

Overview

The Halyard Clip ensures that your spinnaker will not launch itself while sailing upwind and that the halyard will not get in the way during tacks and maneuvers.   It automatically releases during a spinnaker hoist so you do not have to remember to un-clip it. Just tie it where you need it.

Installation

Tie the SOAK Halyard Clip to the boat in the location where you want the spinnaker halyard to run. Experiment with several locations to find the spot that is most suitable to your boat and its rigging.

To secure the halyard:
Snap the halyard into the SOAK Halyard Clip and lightly pull out the slack in the line. Experiment to find the right amount of tension for the halyard: too little tension may cause the halyard to foul; too much tension can put pressure on the sails or cause the halyard to pull free.

To release the halyard:

The SOAK Halyard Clip will automatically release when you pull on the halyard as you would during a normal spinnaker hoist.   On some boats, it may be beneficial for the bow or mast crew to give a quick tug on the halyard to release the clip prior to hoisting the spinnaker. This technique ensures the clip will not get in the way when pre-feeding, etc.

Other uses for the Halyard Clip

  • Holds the lazy guy on the boat near the bow person to aid in quick gybes.
  • Aids in keeping the topping lift clear of the jib while sailing upwind.
  • Holds a spinnaker retrieval line or lazy guy in place for the sewer person to retrieve during a spinnaker takedown.
  • Holds other lines in place to aid in shorthanded sailing.

Use and installation tips by boat type

  • Dinghy: Tie the halyard clip to the base of the shrouds. This keeps the spinnaker halyard close to the shrouds and out of the way of the forward crew.
  • Small keelboat (companionway launched spinnaker): Tie the Halyard Clip to the base of the shrouds or close to the companionway.   If the Halyard Clip releases the halyard when the boom is eased into a run position, then try moving the Halyard Clip further outboard.
  • Keelboat with non-overlapping jib (front hatch launched spinnaker): Tie the Halyard Clip to the base of the shrouds or lifeline stanchion aft of the jib.
  • Keelboat with overlapping genoa (front hatch launched spinnaker): Tie the Halyard Clip to the base of the bow pulpit and allow the halyard to run forward and up alongside the forestay. This keeps the halyard clear of the clew of the genoa, which can otherwise, foul on the halyard during tacks.
